I just wanted to post this now before I blink and it's this time next week and it's the big day. I want to wish you all a very merry Christmas. I hope that wherever you are even if you are snowed inside or sitting on the beach melting that you all have a lovely and most importantly a relaxing day.

My philosophy this year is this - as long as I spend it with the people that really matter to me and everyone has a good time then that will be a bloody good Christmas, no fuss, no worries just some good, quality time with the important people. We may eat our own body weight in turkey and scoff a few tonnes of Quality Street as well but most of all we will all be happy together and I hope that you have a very HAPPY Christmas too! Above is a Smiling Seasonal Sprout to get you in the mood and Christmas wouldnt be Christmas without... well Jesus, obviously... but also it's just not Christmas without a bit of Bing.

And of course this...

Busy, busy, busy...

Well! My new job is brilliant but super-noodle busy! I have designed some Christmas cards for 2012, it's so much easier doing it in December rather than in July which is when I usually end up doing them. This isn't the only difference, this time they are letting me put my name on them! Now this really is a big deal. In all of my previous jobs it was frowned upon for anyone to have any printed to their own work and apart from squeezing my initials into numerous Disney word searches I have never been allowed to add my name, until today! Six of my very own designed Christmas cards will be off to print sometime in the next week. How exciting! Here are some tiny snippets of them, they will of course be followed by the real thing as soon as I have them in my hot little hand and have checked it's OK with the new Boss Man.

Pease... Peas... please?!?

I had a lovely night last night. I pottered around the (freezing but beautiful) Christmas Market with the girls from my new work (who are ace by the way, I have really fallen on my feet as far as work colleges go!) and then after a quick whiz on the merry-go-round (yes, I am a grown up and no, there weren't that many children on it but it's ok as there were also another 15 grown women who were on it as well. I shall call it networking, very fun networking!) I popped over to Pizza Express for dinner with my old work ladies.

Last night was pikey Wednesday, 2-4-1 Pizza's at Pizza Express and it was yummy! I was sat opposite Jenny Ellory, who I had worked with during my time at Portico. She now works as a full time freelancer and her work is wonderful, I'd take a look here if I were you.

Anyway, she suggested that I change my 'pease' to 'peas' as it just looks as though I cant spell, and so I did, and here it is again, amended as requested.

Sunday, 5 December 2010

Ah, I am a terrible blogger, I have been so busy I just haven't had the time to do this. Even now, when I should be spending some quality time at the Christmas Market with my oldest friend I am trying to squeeze in a hundred things. Luckily it's raining and Christmas Market Saturday - synonymous in Bath as the busiest day of the year, and one where town needs to be avoided! So we are sat on my bed, slanket deployed watching Mrs. Doubtfire while I attempt to catch up with my blogging, before X-factor, the main reason for a Saturday evening.

After a last minute and well deserved holiday in Egypt I started my new job. It's fantastic! Week one went very well, I have been super busy designing a range of travel stationary which should be off to print next week. It's all good.

I am going to make a huge effort to blog something creative soon, I just need to survuve the last Christmas rush, parties and epic Christmas card writing session and I shall be back to my normal bloggy self soon.

Remember to Remember

I wanted to post a poem here for Armistice day. I have spent a little while trying to find the perfect one. I've read poems about Flanders Field, about remembrance and loss, and about repatriation, and I have realised just how hypocritical I would have been posting a poem about an experience I can never relate to. I have never been to war and I have no intention of doing so and I am so lucky to have that choice.

By doing this I have realised that today is about just that. It's about remembrance and thanks to the few who have found themselves in these awful situations immortalised in poetry and have sacrificed everything to save me from the same.
So thank you to those who have fallen in war, today I will remember you.

Getting Festive Again...

The adverts are on the TV, the decorations are in the shops and yesterday I bought the very first Christmas present. There's only 45 days to go until the big man arrives... I have so much to do!

Here's a little festive card to get me in the festive mood.

Here is another attempt at a boy design... a skull... with flowers?! Hmm... back to the drawing board perhaps?

Wednesday, 3 November 2010

Last Monday I got a new job! Although I am a bit sad to be leaving the old one it's a great new opportunity for change and progression up the career ladder and I am super happy about it! I honestly can't wait to get there. I love a good change in life... let's hope it is everything I hope it will be.
So from the 29th November I will be designing stationary rather than greetings cards.
Wish me luck!

Monday, 18 October 2010

I have been shuffling through my work recently, mostly because my poor little mac is so full with work, and I have realised that most of my work is all pink and girly... so here, I present some Robots! Very boyish and hopefully not to scary for them.

Tiny Penguin Alone

Here is a penguin picked up from the Christmas wrap I designed a little while ago so that you can see him in more detail. I think he would make a fantastic Christmas card.

Penguin Love

Here are a couple of penguins, arn't they happy together holding hands! A 'flock' of penguins is called a rookery, a creche and even a parcel.

They are a bit fat... maybe they have eaten too many fushes? I think I might make them thin, christmas them up and make them into a lovely romantic festive wrap... stay tuned!

Humphrey the camel has one humph... and red eyes!

The Man's back... hooray! What? You didn't notice he'd gone? Well clearly you haven't seen me in a while. I have bored my family and friends to tears talking about how much I missed him. He was away with work, quite a normal occurrence. I think I have mentioned before that he is an RAF type man and as with all RAF types they are always popping around the world. This time it was hot and humid for him, from the sounds of things they just played a lot of volleyball, drank cool beers in the sun and did very little flying... I'd like a job like that please?
But I do keep reminding myself that I love what I do and by no means would I like to be stuck in some of the other unsavory places he's made to go.

Anyway, the good news is he brought back presents! I have a beautiful and soft pashmina and a Humphrey the psycho Camel... yes, Humphrey because he has a hump and psycho because when you put 3 AA batteries in his zipped tummy his eyes glow bright red and he chants something in Arabic... classic psycho if you ask me! Where or why that was his choice of present is beyond me. Of course I love Humphrey, he'll make a great edition to the clan but maybe I shall skip the batteries... he's just too frightening!

Good to have you back Ex

Look... how beautiful

My fantastic sister brought this home for me today from our house in Cheltenham and I LOVE It!
Isn't it beautiful? I love all of the little details and the fact that it has it's original instruction manual. I know that they mass produced millions of them but I love mine so much!

Sorry, it is a very ugly photo!

At the moment I have no idea how to use it but my brain is already overflowing with things I'd like to make with it. First will be a present for said sister to say thank you and secondly I am going to make a stuffed penguin doorstop for The Man. Oh, I can't wait! Lets hope there are some good instructions on You Tube on how to thread the thing!

Also, I found a website where you can print your own patterns onto fabric! Now that combined with my new Singer could be wonderful, I'm seriously considering making some butterfly pillows as everyone seems to want one, including myself and some fruit badges.

Midford Estate Ident and House Brochure

Below is a brochure I designed for Midford Estates, Ltd. a few years ago, it was for a new build house sale in Bath. I had previously designed their ident for them.

I have a fantastic mixed hockey team who I play with on Sundays, when I am not broken that is.
I am very happy and proud to say that I am their social secretary, which is a great honour... although I think it has more to do with the ability for me to hold my drink than anything else, but the less said about that the better!

Next month I am organising a big Quiz to raise some funds and generally have a giggle, here's the invitation I designed for the last one. Cheese-on-toast cheesy but it does the job.

Queen Bee

Here is a new birthday card that I have designed for a friend, she is a classic Queen Bee, I hope she likes it.

Tyrrell like Squirrel

The way, the truth, the life..? No, I'm not sure either.

Childrens Fruit

Here is a new idea I am developing for a range of childrens patterns that could be applied to wraps, bibs and clothing. There are two examples here for development, I think I am going to work with the material one, but I like both. I think the photography ones would be great for a childrens book!

Thank you card

Just a tiny post this time. It was my birthday a few weekends ago. I am 26!!! My goodness, anyway here is a personalised Thank You card I have just finished for The Mans family.

Sunday, 8 August 2010

I have been messing about with some vintage typography in my spare time. Here is an example of some Wife and Wedding stationary and cards I have been experimenting with.

Another Butterfly Pattern

Here is another example of a butterfly image that could be used as a material, this time the butterfly images are 1c tiffs coloured up in Illustrator with a white botanical pattern. Below are some examples of pillow finishes.

Vintage Images

I thought I'd develop the ideas taken from the 'New Vintage' look which seems to be in fashion at the moment and incorporate it with real vintage imagery from the time. Below are two examples which I will develop further at some point. It's a basic butterfly pattern.
I think the butterfly pattern works well on the pillow and could make a great material on a rough cotton... maybe one day I can shall get all crafty and screen print it.

I have been invited to a wedding! Which really is a very special thing for me as I am not quite at that age where everyone is 'taking the plunge' so the thought of me going to one is very exciting indeed!

However the man (who despite his youthful looks is well into the age of friends mass marriages) simply isn't that excited. Time ticked on and despite constant wedding related questioning from me he forgot to reply to the bride, who I am told is a good friend... hmm... anyway, I was therefore entasked with the job of making an 'I'm sorry my boyfriend was so rubbish and forgot to reply to your wedding invite card', and here it is, lets hope she likes it.I think there might be something in this, I'd like to develop the typography idea a bit further but keep it commercial. 'I am sorry that I am your bestest friend but I didnt notice your birthday reminder pop up on Facebook' is a good one, now that's a card I could use!

When I grow up I want to be...

I have a tendency to buy art when I am abroad, I have a Ponte Vecchio piece from Florence, some abstract but mesmerising squiggles from Madrid and a beautiful piece of glass from Kephalonia... but it is my Bath artists piece that has finally found itself a frame and has been put in pride of place on my wall.

I first found the great work of Nicky Snow during the Bath Christmas Market last year and I love her work. She describes her work as 'The New Vintage', perfect for the times and especially Bath. I recommend a look.

Yes, I completely admit it... I have been useless at this blogging thing, it's taken me a whole month to write on here again, and I only have one excuse, plain and simple... I have been soooo busy!

I have done a massive amount of freelancing (which does make Jess a very dull girl) and none of it is exciting enough to pop up here. Instead I am going to share with you this weeks pride and joy. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you... my cake!

I am so proud of it, and yes, it took me absolutely ages. It was in celebration of Armed Forces Day and as the man is an RAF type man it was mostly made to impress him. I think he liked it.

I am going to add my lady soon (as promised a while ago), I just need to get a bit technical with my scanner so bear with me.

New design Jessica

design Jessica has a new identity!
I have decided to get myself organised, and so today I have been busy designing a new ident and new stationary in an attempt to refine the brand.

I like it so far but it's definitely missing a saucy vintage lady which I shall add later, after some discussion with the man as to which one he likes best, he'll enjoy feeling 'creatively' evolved, plus he'll get to check out the totty while I frantically freelance over the bank-holiday. Expect a hot bird adorning the ident by Tuesday!

Update: The lady has been chosen (well 3 have, I am looking for the finalist) however my scanner is broken, the bits are on order and hopefully she'll be up in all her saucy glory soon.

Update: The parts have arrived! Hopefully squeeze in my options tomorrow before I scamper off to Amsterdam!

Monday, 17 May 2010

So I think I am going to try my hand at this pattern making malarky, however at the moment I am struggling for some inspiration. Here are some flowers in the meantime, I hope my ideas become better than this!

Once upon a time...

Here is a small piece I designed just now purely for fun, and I enjoyed it. It's so good to get designing when I am out of the office. I am hoping that something more will come of it as the vintage look, I really like the looking glass and the script and vintage is very 'en vogue' at the moment. I'm going to check out some vintage literature and see if that sparks any ideas.

In other news my house nearly did burn down... but no, I didnt save my HSM book!
